What role did scalawagsand carpetbaggers play in Reconstruction?

They controlled the governments in the confederate states and supported the federal reconstruction plans. Some were motivated by profit others by idealism,but they all held power by depending upon the votes of the newly enfranchised blacks. Gradually they were displace as the "old" power arrangements reerted themselves and blacks lost the vote.
