Mechanic help 98 ford contour?

my 98 ford is acting up. please help. You start it up and the rpms go up like normal, then they come down p 1 and the engine dies. It will start right back up again, but then the same thing happens. I tested the battery its fine. The guy said it shouldn't be the alternator since it starts back up. Any ideas?????
