What causes condensation in a freezer???

We have a freezer (attached to the refrigerator) that forms a thick layer of ice on the bottom and has to be broken up fairly often. I have NO idea what is causing it! The food is not defrosting, so the temp doesn't seem to be the problem. I thought something might have leaked, but that's not it either. Any ideas?! I am completely clueless at this point!
