Views about the way of life in China...?

I went to China for the first time with friends during the summer and I have to say it was a very good experience. Food was terrific (25 cents for full course meals), and the sightseeing was awesome. Not once did I see some restaurant that served "dog or cat" or did I see some chinese family eating fetuses, even the most rural parts of china, people ate NORMAL everyday chinese food...I also seemed to notice that A LOT of caucasians live there as well, according to my friend, they speak better chinese than they can. There are people like me everywhere I go in China and they are content at where they're staying...I'd like to ask the people that hold China in such negative light, where do you get your prejudiced information from about China? How do you know if you've never been? Where do you get your information from? Internet? Discovery Channel? Are you really THAT gullible?
